Finasteride and dutasteride both block 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. Dutasteride covers both forms of the enzyme and acts harder for it.
They only address loss driven by DHT. Compounds that are not reduced by that enzyme are untouched by either drug, so neither is a blanket insurance policy, and results take months to judge. A minority report libido and mood effects.
